The Dundee Science Centre has been bringing science to three different audiences as part of the Folk Fae Fife Science Festival: Healthy Body Bits for primary schools, Genes in a Bottle and a Science Communication workshop for secondary schools, and the Science in the Shopping Centre event at the Rothes Hall in Glenrothes.

Healthy Body Bits

During the week of 14-18 June 2010, the Dundee Science Centre brought a gigantic ragdoll named Stuffee to primary school pupils so that they may explore what organs we have inside us! They looked at each organ and talked about what they are, what they do and how we can look after them and keep them healthy. This workshop was brought to:

Balcurvie PS (Primary 1, 2, 3, 6, 7) - Monday 14th June 2010
Cardenden PS -Tuesday 15th June 2010
Lochgelly West PS - Wednesday 16th June 2010
Dunnikier PS (P2, 4 and 6) - Thursday 17th June 2010
Crossgate PS (P2-6) - Friday 18th June 2010

Genes in a Bottle/

Science Communication

Dundee Science Centre delivers their Genes in a Bottle workshop to S1-S2 pupils. This activity provides participants with hands-on experience of doing an experiment and visualizing real DNA - what better way to learn about DNA than to see it? It is a simple activity that can be done with household materials and explores proper scientific method. What's more, pupils get to put their own extracted DNA into a necklace to take home with them!

Inverkeithing High School - Thursday 23rd September 2010
Viewforth High School - Tuesday 5th October 2010
Buckhaven High School - Tuesday 12th October 2010
Waid Academy - Tuesday 16th November 2010

An additional two schools are to be confirmed.

On Tuesday 21st September Dundee Science Centre also will host a full day training session for young people to learn techniques for science communication, as well as science activities that can be delivered to a primary school audience.  Each student will be provided with a full kit of equipment and materials for their visits to primary schools. Schools taking part are yet to be confirmed.

Science in the Shopping Centre

This was a fun event with families extracting their own DNA, taking their fingerprints and enjoying some science experiment demonstrations! Other Folk Fae Fife partners were also there, including geoHeritage Fife and their Geology of the Coal of Fife exhibit, the University of St Andrews demonstrating visual perception of right angles and sharing a slide show and discussion of the Folk Fae Fife scientists, and Carnegie College discussed ways to study science.
